I was going through Brahma's blog to see what he has got to write on Tharoor now! That's when I thought let me try yours.

Wonderful on-site reporting! My one earnest request - Keep it coming.

Now, as to the citizens not being around - damn we have our lives to take care of. That's why we bestow the responsibility on the politicians, if only they lived up to it.

You jolly well know where my loyalties lie and hence am refraining from comments on the LDF and the UDF. But I liked the your appreciation of the party being a 'prasthanam'.

Cheers,
Naga.Nagahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05756607454179669667noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5953482879862812067.post-62528746684284102622009-12-23T10:09:44.940+05:302009-12-23T10:09:44.940+05:30"That Kerala under the left has a better soci..."That Kerala under the left has a better social security net and is a welfare state compared to the India under the UPA came out today in the pronouncements the councillors made."

Kerala is more suburban than rural, and is way above in many socio-economic parameters. Nonetheless, most of the youth are forced to work outside the state (except a few brave hearts like you who are ready to drop the coin for the kick). Don't you think this is the making of the hypocrite governments and the prejudiced society in the state waiting to kill the slightest of a change?

I work in the field of equity investments, and receive proposals for funding on a regular basis. I have received nothing from Kerala (3% of the population of the country) and some 8-9% from Gujarat (5% of the population of the country). Manappuram Finance, Shobha Developers, Casino Hotels, V-Guard and Muthoot are sprinklers against what the Indian entrepreneurial culture has produced. The state will never change unless the society sheds the 'frog in the well' attitude. Why read Dickens or Austen to understand the British parochialism; We have it all around us in the 'bigot's own country'.

Also you would have seen a story published in your 'sister' magazine, about the breaking down of the equitable healthcare model in the state.

Lovely post, by the way.Passionsoflifehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09127258694621064766noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5953482879862812067.post-48261135335037918862009-12-12T12:05:38.073+05:302009-12-12T12:05:38.073+05:30Scorpio, i couldn't agree more on the current ...Scorpio, i couldn't agree more on the current leadership of the CPI(M) in the state. But I have met some local level leaders and they seemed decent men with a grip on issues and working actively in their constitencies/wards, etc. You know, when I used to hear old SFI guys tell me that the CPM is a prasthanam and not any set of individuals at the top, I used to laugh...that could not have been more truer, right down to the man on the street, the faith in socialism is something that makes our state more beautiful than the nature we are blessed with.

Rajesh, I would love to see NREGS applied to private agricultural land in Kerala but the centre is opposed to it because of the fear that in other states it will become a tool in the hands of feudal lords. Moreover NREGS till now has not built a sustainable rural infrastructure, but 2010 will hopefully change that. The fact that India is withstanding the drought to some extent is because NREGS has provided work to our farmers in drought hit states. The challenge for the parliamentary left is how to create openings in other states where they are really needed. Will write about journalism next. At the end of the day its another profession, but most of us worry about doing something outside the routine atleast thrice a week( even as I type this comment, I am wondering what story can be done).

Vinodcheta, every week atleast a dozen seminars and workshops for officials and elected members happen in the district on various laws, schemes, etc. I myself learn a lot just by sitting there to report. The problem in daily reporting is that there is no time to do a deep study on the outcome of these training programmes and write reports. I agree LDF are not doing much but I agree with their ideas. Here too the corporation is crippled by not having people with ideas for projects.Jibyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07324353796946088382noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5953482879862812067.post-86648918019186453562009-12-12T00:06:53.371+05:302009-12-12T00:06:53.371+05:30I guess the problem with decentralized - and even ...I guess the problem with decentralized - and even centralized - planning in govt is one of capacity. If we do not teach the people who are supposed to do things how to do it, where are they supposed to learn this?

Training for government employees and elected members at various levels of government is a must.

And about LDF, I disagree - the current bunch are just talkers. The state government has been in power for 3.5 years, and now think about whether they want a single window or not? JNNURM pays 80% of developmental works in TVM, and the corporation has not submitted any really good projects.Vinod/Kakkahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05256447889123395310noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5953482879862812067.post-73501254614840572432009-12-11T22:27:09.879+05:302009-12-11T22:27:09.879+05:30Thanks Jiby .. enjoyed reading your post today. Le...Thanks Jiby .. enjoyed reading your post today. Let ask you ...
Is NREGS really a successful scheme ? There are conflicting reports in the press. Hard for us to actually take a view. But at least the concept is very good.
Yes, I too agree that the communist parties have the "human touch" factor. Despite all the rubbish that's happening in the assembly and in the party, I somehow have this feeling that yes, its only the left parties that really stand up for the poor or at least talk about it.
At least they do something.
But nowadays I'm kind of getting cynical with all of this. It looks all crap. Just another game that they play on us. Simple.
So I stay neutral or am kind of detached.
News - That's another thing these days... Anything is news. The fact is that - Priyaka chopra wearing the same dress that Rima wore last week, becomes "news". I'm sure the journos themselves are a confused lot. What to write about ? What "story" should they cook up today ? The "word" is NEVER the "truth".
Decadence at it's peak I guess !Rajesh Mohanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06272662921710001026noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5953482879862812067.post-20688320638503389122009-12-11T15:16:46.581+05:302009-12-11T15:16:46.581+05:30Jiby, in a way it is good to learn that such kind ...Jiby, in a way it is good to learn that such kind of activities re city chores are taken with at least some seriousness.

Re the Commies I thought about this one of yours for a while:

CPM despite all their perversions and follies can speak better for the lower and lower-middle classes than any of the parties today

Well, I couldn't agree more. I appreciate the way some of the erstwhile leaders of the Left have led the state (it definitely doesn't include any of the present ones) but they surely have lost their way. I may appear too prejudiced when I speak about the Lefties, so I'm not saying anything more.

It is nice and relieving to see people of the 4th Estate like you, who have genuine interest n concern for the progress of the state, taking their time to see how the machinery works on the ground, and enlighten people like us. For general public, including me, these affairs may be dull and drab, but I'm sure if there is more insight into how the works of these members could be made fruitful by involvement of the public, then the functionality -- accountability problem you're speaking about could be addressed.

But again most of the time spent there has been to take potshots at each other. So there is one reason why the common men are disinterested in these processes.scorpiogeniushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08071359354604682509noreply@blogger.com
